Description
Vivid Purpurea
Vivid Purpurea is a Dragon Fruit hybrid from Hylocereus polyrhizus and another unknown species. Some internet research states the other species is an undatus; we have not confirmed this. A nursery initially introduced this variety in Southern California, and it is unknown where the nursery received it. Spicy Exotics aquired this variety from a tropical nursery in California.
Growth
This variety is a robust grower with large three-sided olive-green stems. Medium spins occur along the rib line of each branch, where they are the first point of contact. The growth resembles the Michelle Dragon Fruit variety.
Flowers
Flower bud to night-blooming flower takes 25 days, then another 30 days to harvest the fruit in South Louisiana. Blooms fully open a couple of hours after sunset and close a few hours after sunrise.
Fruit
The fruit flesh has a purplish, reddish flesh with tiny green fins and no spines. This variety produces a round-shaped fruit that weighs three-quarters to one pound. Fruits test with an average brix of 16. We find the more significant the fruit, the better the taste, and we expect both numbers to increase as the plant matures. Like most red flesh varieties, the fruit is high in antioxidants making this Dragon Fruit variety excellent eaten fresh, in jams, as a garnish, or as juice in drinks.
